Il Palio Horse Race – Siena, Italy05.04.07 |
An explosive spectacle takes place every year in Siena on July 2 and August 16 at the famous, “Piazza del Campo”, still used today for the well known Palio horse race. One of the most famous popular Italian manifestations. The horse and rider represent one of the seventeen Contrade, or city wards. A magnificent pageant precedes the race, which attracts visitors and spectators from around the world.
On the dangerously steep track, the jockey’s ride bareback and are allowed to use their whips not only for their own horse, but also for disturbing other horses and riders. The winner is the first horse to cross the finish line with its head ornaments intact — the rider does not necessarily need to finish, and often does not. The loser in the race is considered to be the Contrada whose horse came in second, not last.
You can find tickets for sale or you can stand in the Piazza free of charge, which gives you a great opportunity to mix with the locals. Since the Piazza is raked, almost anywhere you stand affords a good vantage point for most of the race. Just know that since the race track actually encloses the Piazza, the fences are closed before the pageant (about 4:30) and it is impossible to leave until the race is completed (about 8:00). Also, the Piazza is in the sun most of the afternoon, so be sure to take along a hat to keep you out of the sun.
