Know Before You Go: Digging for Chic Hotels
|

Does the word “Boutique Hotel” mystify you because you never know exactly what you will get? Have you ever traveled abroad and stayed in a hotel that did not fit the bill? Ever uncover a hotel that surprised the heck out of you with something spectacular, that made you revel with joy, as if somehow, you beat the system? Let’s face it, you are hard to please, and you expect the best.

To help determine if the hotel is a genuine find, take a look at the following factors and don’t be afraid to ask before you sign on. I find that calling ahead of time makes a world of difference, especially with the smaller properties that can often times be at full capacity when you arrive.

Room
1. Size does matter. A good rule of thumb is 400 square feet with a bona fide sitting area.
2. Room with a view. Nothing worse than finding out you are looking at a parking lot or situated above the nightclub.
3. Sleep like a baby. Sheets and linens can really make you feel right at home, 300 thread count should be your minimum standard.
TIP – Find out which rooms are a staff favorite or what rooms have recently been refurbished and request ahead of time.

Food + Wine
1. 24-hour room service.
2. Glance at the menus to make sure that there is creativity and local ingredients. Also, pay close attention to the wine list making sure that they have a nice selection in quantity and quality.
TIP – Check with the Restaurant manager for reservations and dress attire, often times the restaurant will have a special table or dining experience that is not to be missed.

Service
1. Staff vs. Guest. A ratio of one to one is typical at most luxury properties. Anything above that and they are aiming to please.
TIP – When calling ahead ask to speak to the concierge about guest services. If they offer a wide range of programs from trainers to excursions and offer you valuable information, this is a good indication of their commitment to your comfort and satisfaction.

Location
1. Many hotel finds can be found just outside the hustle and bustle. Intimacy can be a luxury, but can also be a drag if you want some action. Make sure to find out how far you are from other activities and restaurants, if you like to venture out.
TIP – Request a list of their recommended restaurants and activities with distances to and from in advance.
