Results of the New 7 Wonders of The World were announced yesterday (07.07.07). The first ever global election of the best natural monuments and sites around the globe. Over 100 million votes were cast over the internet and from cellphone text messages, said New7Wonders, the nonprofit organization conducting the poll.

1. Chichen Itza, Mexico - The most famous Mayan temple city, which can still be seen today, served as the political and economic center of the Mayan civilization. The Pyramid at Chichen Itza was built before 800 A.D.

2. Christ Redeemer, Brazil - Standing over 38 meters tall, the statue of Jesus stands tall on the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Designed by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa and created by French sculptor Paul Landowski, it took over 5 years to build and was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

3. The Great Wall, China - The largest man-made monument to have ever been built, was designed to link existing fortification into a united defense system and better keep invading Mongol tribes out China. 220 B.C. and 1368-1644 A.D.

4. Machu Picchu, Peru - A city built in the clouds on the mountain known as Machu Picchu was eradicated in the 15th century by the Incan Emperor Pachacutec. This city lies deep in the Amazon jungle halfway up the Andes Plateau which remained “lost” for over three centuries and was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham.

5. Petra, Jordan - On the edge of the Arabian Desert lies Petra, once the capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV, from 9 B.C. to 40 A.D.

6. The Roman Colosseum, Italy - The amphitheater in the center of Rome 70-82 A.D., was designed to celebrate the glory of the Roman empire where cruel fights and games took place for the joy of the spectators.

7. The Taj Mahal, India - The Mausoleum built in 1630 A.D., to honor the memory of Shah Jahan, the fifth muslim mogul emperor, to honor the memory of his beloved wife. Built of white marble and regarded as the most perfect jewel of Muslim art in India.
