USA TODAY, has been releasing weekly Top 25 lists in celebration of their 25th Anniversary as the nation’s top-selling newspaper.

We just love lists and today the top 25 list continues with Top 25 Travel Milestones.

Here are the Top Ten:

 1. Online booking
Computer geeks with an affinity for alphabet soup fare codes couldaccess flight information as early as the mid 1980s, but PC Travel’s nationwide debut in 1994 helped jump-start the growth of online booking sites such as Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz and dozens of others — including Priceline and its revolutionary “name your own price” concept. This year, Internet sales will represent more than half of all travel bookings.

2. TSA airport security
Created after 9/11, the Transportation Security Administration drastically altered the carry-on rules. Now passengers wait in line, shoeless, jacketless and clutching toiletry-filled transparent baggies.

3. Airline e-tickets
Ticketless air travel began in early 1995 when Southwest began selling “paperless” tickets via its own computer system at airports. A family from Washington State bought the first paperless tickets ever sold via the Internet from Alaska Airlines in December 1995.

4. Roll-aboard luggage
Working out of his garage in 1987, Northwest Airlines pilot Robert Plath affixed wheels and a pull-out handle to a suitcase, creating the first rolling, vertical carry-on. Available only to the airline industry at first, he began mass marketing his Travelpro Rollaboard in 1991.

5. Smoke-free flights
Northwest Airlines became the first major U.S. carrier to ban smoking on its North American flights in 1988. At the same time, a federal regulation took effect to bar lighting up on flights of less than two hours. In 1995, Delta was the first to ban smoking on all flights.

6. Boutique hotel chains
In 1983, Bill Kimpton opened his second San Francisco hotel, effectively launching the USA’s first boutique lodging group. Kimpton Hotels jump-started the move toward high style, personalized service and individual design in small- to medium-size urban lodgings.

7. Airports as malls
Pittsburgh’s airport pioneered a revolutionary concept in 1992 guaranteed street pricing in its shops and restaurants. This brought in major chains led to the “mallification” of U.S. airports.

8. Indian casinos
Once considered illicit outlets for crooked mobsters, casinos spread nationwide after a 1988 federal law sanctioned Indian gaming on reservations and tribal land. Today, about 40% of the nation’s 562 tribes run gaming operations in 28 states.

9. GPS car navigation systems
We were lost, and now we’re found, thanks to these all-knowing devices, which began popping up in cars in the 1990s. Tapping U.S. satellite signals, they offer befuddled travelers turn-by-turn directions.

10. Self-service ticketing kiosks
Do-it-yourself ticketing kiosks started appearing in airports in 1994, although Southwest had a rudimentary self-ticketing machine as early as 1979.

Mr. and Mrs. Schliff will be checking into The Parker Palm Springs today. We’ll be mixing business with pleasure, as it is our 5-year anniversary (Congratulations to us, honey!).

I decided it was time to check out this Parker in the desert and see what all the fuss is about (btw, we love Le Parker Meridian in New York). During these hot summer months, they are offering a spendid deal called Spa Junkie where they give you a $200 spa credit per night (pure bliss if you ask me).

In anticipation of our arrival, I decided to watch, “Welcome To The Parker” last night on Bravo TV to get myself familiar with the happenings of the property. What I got was a lot of drama and an orchestrated “behind the scenes” look that wasn’t so pretty. I have to admit, it was a bit painful to watch. Sort of like a love-hate relationship, the <del datetime="2007-08-24T15:25:25+00:00">characters</del>, staff, prove to us that this is not your ordinary hotel. Are they redefining the hotel experience? No. Adding a new element? Yes, I believe so. After all, there is a whole new generation of travelers out there pushing the envelope and expecting a new level of hotel experience.

I just got to ask, what hotelier in there right mind would open their doors to let you see the inside? All in the name of entertainment? Is bad press the new good press?

In any event, I am looking forward to a very swanky, sexy, perhaps even relaxing weekend and I know they will deliver.

I can not say enough good things about this book. In fact, I am hanging on the last chapters for fear of her story ending. I know it’s silly.

Whether you are taking a long flight, lounging by the pool or just looking for a good read, Eat, Pray, Love a memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert is my summer pick.

A women who had it all, Elizabeth Gilbert (thirty-something) decides to give up her perfect little life and spend a year traveling in search of self-discovery across Italy (for pleasure), India (for prayer) and Indonesia (for balance). Men will love this book, too.

Paramount Pictures picked up the rights to this book late in 2006. Julia Roberts will star, Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck creator) will be adapting the screenplay and directing, and Brad Pitt with Dede Gardner will produce. Coming soon, 2008.

For those of you that have read her book, check out these photo’s (scroll to the bottom) of her travels during Eat, Pray, Love.

Inventive and utter genius. These little books from Moleskine are a must have item for the avid traveler, a perfect gift for the graduate or even great for those who live there. The legendary notebooks have been used for centuries by artists and creators, like Van Gogh, Picasso, Hemingway and more as a place to scribble ideas and sketches.

Originally produced by a small French company who shut their doors in 1986 only to be revived by a Milanese publisher in 1998. The adventure continues with these handy city guidebooks. Already in publication are the European cities of Amersterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Milan, Paris, Prague, Rome, Vienna and the US & Canada cities of Boston, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Montreal. New cities being added each quarter.

What’s included is the whole city in a single notebook, where you can:

*Create your personal city map.

*Use it to collect and keep everything
you need and enjoy: places, addresses,
people, stories, memories.

*Use it over and over: modify it, update it.

*Be sure to find: the next time you visit the city,
everything you’ll need will be there.

*For exchanging information of all kinds.

*Go back over your travels in your memory
and your imagination.

Next time you travel to another country, consider learning the language. It may not be as hard as you think. Whether it is brushing up, learning for the first time or you just want to show off to your multi-lingual friends, I highly recommend Rosetta Stone.

I am passing this along because I am truly amazed at the ease of the language program they have designed. I have tried the cd’s and nothing could be worse than listening to the same mundane voice over and over. I am not the only one giving this program high praise. Guess who else endorses this creative way to learn? US State Department, Fortune 500 executives and NASA to name a few.

Here is why it is so great – The program is a fully interactive instruction incorporating the four necessary skills needed to be fluent which are, listening, reading, speaking and writing. Some people learn visually, some by hearing and others through active involvement. With Dynamic Immersion, you think in the new language and quickly develop the skills and structures needed to communicate. With voices of native speakers, written text, thousands of real-life images and really neat tools like recording your own voice until you are satisfied with your accent. Available in 30 languages from $195
